Partial Bibliography

Excerpted from SPINE INTACT, SOME CREASES (ECIB 2004, reissued by Wildside Press, 2007)

Here as promised is a partial bibliography of the books et alii that I wrote—partial because, as I explained many pages back, I no longer have copies of all the books I did and many of those titles have fled my memory; and there are as well those untitled books I did at the end of my gay paperback period. I have made no attempt to include them here.

Nor have I included any books of which I could not with certainty cite titles or bylines. My fellow writer—and sometimes partner—Sam Dodson and I did a great many books together and sometimes with Lady Agatha. I remember, for example, a bodice-ripper titled Love’s Tormented Flame, but I have no copy of it and no longer recall the byline that appeared on the book, and in fact I am not even entirely certain of the title and so I have omitted it from this list. I have also not included the previously mentioned Black and White Together because, although Sam and I assuredly did write a book with that title, I no longer have a copy and am not sure of the byline or publisher, or even the year of publication. And there was that marriage manual and other illustrated books which are also long vanished from my library and my memory.

I also wrote some volumes in the perennially popular macho action series, The Executioner, byline Mack Bolan, but since I haven’t the faintest idea which volumes they were (and it was a multi-volume series) I have left them out as well.
There is some inevitable confusion when one gets into the realm of these paperback publisher’s imprints. Many of the pulp publishers released books under a variety of imprints and sometimes more than one imprint appears in the same book. Greenleaf Classics, Corinth Publications, Leisure Books, Ember Library Books, Sundown Reader, Adult Books, Companion Books, Nightstand Books, and Late-Hour Library Books were all essentially the same San Diego operation owned by William Hamling et alii. Brandon House Books, Barclay House Books, and Private Edition Books were all part of the Luros operations in North Hollywood, and Sherbourne Press and Medco Books were the same Los Angeles outfit.

If the Publishers imprints were confusing, the question of bylines is a veritable circus. As I have already indicated, when they joined forces to form Greenleaf Classics, Scott Meredith was a prominent literary agent and Hamling was virtually a legend in the field of science fiction—as an author and as creator and editor of sci-fi magazines, among them Imagination, Imaginative Tales, and Space Travel. Between the two of them, they brought an incredible list of “A” writers on board to write pulps for Greenleaf.

There is a popular misconception that pulp fiction writers are usually hacks, but in fact Greenleaf’s stable of writers during its heyday included such popular and well regarded authors as Tony Calvano, Hal Dresner, Robert Silverberg, Donald Westlake, John Jakes, Harlan Ellison, Lawrence Block, Evan Hunter, and Marion Zimmer Bradley, among others.

Of course, these were not writers who wanted their own names on sexy paperbacks, and in no time at all, Greenleaf had accrued a collection of house names, many of which did multiple duty for numerous writers. So, J. X. Williams, which appeared on some of my novels, was a byline as well for John Jakes and Edward Wood Jr., among others. Don Holliday was a byline for Jakes also, and for Hal Dresner, Lawrence Block, Arthur Plotnik, and numerous others.

Earl Kemp has told me that it was originally intended that The Man from C.A.M.P. should have its own, exclusive byline, but the first book got the Don Holliday name by mistake, and once that had been published to such overwhelming success, it was too late to go back and change things.

The result of all this is that someone searching for books by Don Holliday will find that there are literally scores of books with that byline—some of which are indeed my writings, and some of which are not. To be honest, even I cannot always distinguish between them, but if there is a particular work about which you would like to know, I will try to sort it out for you.

I have included here only those books of which I am certain. This list represents, as best I can estimate, about two-thirds of my total output.
